I Am what I Am

  I Am What I Am I am neither a daughter nor a mother. I am neither a doctor nor a patient. I am neither a student nor a teacher. I am neither a vanaprastha nor a sannyasi . Then who am I? Am I an individual or cosmic being? Am I the waker? I am beyond the waker. The heavens are my head. The sun and the moon are my eyes. Space is my body. The wind is my breath. Fire is my mouth. The waters are my life. The earth is my feet. As Vishva , I am one with Virat . Yet these describe only the gross body. What of the mind, that dreams? Am I the dreamer? I am beyond the dreamer. I am neither agitated nor calm. I am neither learned nor ignorant. I am neither joyful nor sorrowful. I am the Cosmic Mind. As Taijasa, I am one with Hiranyagarbha . When body and mind sink into deep sleep, Am I the sleeper? I am beyond the sleeper. I know that the body and mind slept well or else that they did not. As Prajña , I am one with Iśvara . I AM

  I Am I create I sustain I resolve In deep silence, I unfold Ākāśa — boundless space. In the gentle stirring of the body, I give rise to Vāyu — the moving wind In going here and there, I kindle Agni — the inner fire. As effort deepens, I become Āpaḥ — the flowing sweat. And as movement continues, I settle as Pṛthvī —the dust  I create, I sustain I resolve —back in silence
